Natural Patina

A quiet treasure, revealed through use

Patina is not oxidation — it’s a soft evolution that appears with regular use. Each fine mark becomes part of the piece’s story, lending a warmth that can’t be replicated.

With time, patina can reduce the need for frequent maintenance. Use your silver often and it will settle into a gentler, more authentic glow — elevating every table with lived-in beauty.

Silver & the Dishwasher

While hand-washing is always preferred, silver cutlery can be cleaned in the dishwasher with care. Following these principles will help preserve both finish and integrity over time.

  1. Before first use, wash silverware by hand using a dishwashing liquid free from chlorine and citric acid. Citrus or lemon-scented products are not recommended.
  2. In the dishwasher, use only chlorine- and citric acid-free washing powders. Avoid gels, liquid detergents, all-in-one tablets (such as 3-in-1), and citrus-scented formulas.
  3. Group knives together in the same basket, blade down and handle up, to avoid contact between stainless steel blades and silver surfaces.
  4. Separate silver and stainless steel cutlery whenever possible, as silver does not react well with other metals. Use separate baskets or cycles if needed.
  5. Do not machine-wash antique knives (pre-1970) or cutlery with horn or wooden handles.
  6. Once the cycle is complete, slightly open the dishwasher door to allow steam to escape and prevent condensation from settling on the blades.
  7. Always follow your dishwasher’s recommendations for water hardness. Excessively hard water can be corrosive to silver.
  8. When refilling regenerating salt, avoid placing silverware in the dishwasher for the first cycle.
  9. Foods such as eggs, lemons, mustard, and fish can cause yellowing. Light pre-washing by hand after these uses may be beneficial.
  10. Avoid washing silver alongside crystal glassware, which can accelerate tarnishing. Use separate cycles where possible.
