Silver Care Guidance

Bakhache Lifestyle Australia

All Christofle flatware available on our website is dishwasher-safe when cared for correctly, with the exception of the Talisman Collection, which should be washed by hand only.

For the coated L’Ame de Christofle Collection, we recommend using the dishwasher sparingly to help preserve the finish and maintain its long-term beauty.

If you are not washing your silverware immediately—whether by hand or in the dishwasher—we suggest rinsing each piece with warm water to remove any food residue. This simple step helps protect the metal and prevents staining or tarnishing.

SILVERWARE AND DISHWASHER

The dishwasher is an effective way to keep Christofle silverware in perfect condition, provided you follow these very simple precautions:

Before using your Christofle silverware for the first time, we recommend washing each piece by hand with a gentle, perfume-free liquid dish detergent. Avoid any products containing synthetic fragrances, citrus, or lemon extracts, as these can damage the surface.

For dishwasher use, select only chlorine-free and citric-acid-free powdered detergents. Avoid gels, liquids, and multi-purpose tablets, which often contain chlorine or lemon-based additives that may cause corrosion or discoloration.

When refilling your dishwasher’s regenerating salt, avoid washing silverware during the first cycle afterwards. Additionally, always follow your dishwasher manufacturer’s recommendations for water hardness—excessively hard water can be corrosive to silver.

Certain foods such as eggs, lemon, mustard, fish, fruits, and legumes may cause yellowing or temporary discoloration. In these cases, a quick hand rinse before placing the items in the dishwasher is beneficial.

Important: Do not place old knives produced before 1968 in the dishwasher.

At the end of the wash cycle, it is ideal to open the dishwasher door halfway. Allowing steam to escape prevents moisture from settling on the silver, and we recommend gently wiping any pieces that remain damp.

To avoid tarnishing, do not place silverware alongside crystal glassware in the same wash.

Finally, always separate sterling silver from stainless steel. These metals should not come into contact during the wash cycle. Use separate flatware baskets or run them in different loads to preserve the integrity and shine of your silverware.
